His areas of teaching and research include constitutional law and politics in the United States, constitutional and political development, political theory, judicial politics, and comparative constitutional studies. His book, Constitutional Rights and Powers of the People (Princeton University Press, 1996), was winner of the 1997 C. Herman Pritchett Award from the Law and Courts Section of the American Political Science Association. The book examines principles and structures of American constitutionalism with reference to the concept of popular sovereignty. His published articles and book chapters include "Constitutional Citizenship," "Reconceiving Interpretive Autonomy: Insights from the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions," "Written and Unwritten Constitutional Law During the Founding Period: The Early New Jersey Cases," "Taking a Stand for Speech," "The Fourteenth Amendment's Initial Authority: Problems of Constitutional Coherence," "From Roots to Branches and Back: Popular Sovereignty Within Constitutional Theory," and "(Re)Construction of Constitutional Authority and Meaning: The Fourteenth Amendment and Slaughter-House Cases. " Dr. Moore is on the Editorial Board of Law and Politics Book Review and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the University of Virginia Press. He is also the faculty advisor for Virginia Tech's pre-law chapter of Phi Alpha Delta and serves as one of the University's pre-law advisors. Prof. Moore has taught in Osaka, Japan, on a Fulbright Fellowship; and his research grants include a Fellowship for College Teachers and Independent Scholars from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
