Radford University Phi Alpha Delta Hosts "Uses of The Law" Panel

March 29th 7pm Heth 014 Radford University

On March 29th, at 7 pm in Heth 014, Radford University Phi Alpha Delta shall host a "Uses of The Law" panel, consisting of local attorneys, and a law professor from Appalachian School of Law. Phi Alpha Delta is currently working on receiving a speaker from Washington & Lee's school of law as well.  The panel is intended to inform students that earning a law degree does not necessarily mean that they have to spend their careers in a courtroom, as it will highlight traditional and non-traditional uses of the law.
We have received confirmation that President Kyle will be attending as a panel speaker.

Phi Alpha Delta will provide light refreshments.

Please contact S. Collin Dougherty sdoughert5@email.radford.edu with any questions.

Title: "Getting Medieval": Torture and Truth in the Middle Ages

Apr. 12, 2012
Time: 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Location: Shanks 370/380

A quick synopsis: One of the most pervasive impressions of the Middle Ages is that torture and judicial brutality were common facets of everyday life, that torture in particular, was a frequent occurrence practiced across
Europe with impunity. This image has been perpetuated in modern media and in recent popular histories of the medieval period. It is an inaccurate and erroneous image. Torture certainly did exist, but it was strictly regulated
and it's abuses were condemned. Nor was it always a tenet of medieval law, in fact, it was illegal in England throughout the Middle Ages. So I will give a brief history of torture in medieval law, where it was legal, where
it was not, what methods were used, where. Then I would describe responses against it, complaints about abuses, with anecdotes from the trial of the Knights Templar and accounts from the Inquisitors manuals by notorious
figures like Bernard Gui. I will also make connections between modern debates about the use of torture and medieval ones, giving modern media examples and medieval literary ones.

Please contact Victoria Le Corre in the English Dept at vlecorre@vt.edu with any questions.
